Your Health:
“Yogurt is a fabulously versatile food.” says independent dietitian Paula Mee when we spoke with her about the benefits of fortified yogurts for children and adults. “Yogurt naturally contains a number of nutrients, most notably calcium which is already found in milk. It is also a good source of protein.”
“Yogurt isn’t usually a source of Vitamin D, unless it has been fortified. Oily fish like salmon and mackerel and sardines are (eggs are only a moderate source) a great source of Vitamin D, but sometimes children may find these foods hard to eat on a regular basis.” Paula said.
Our Yofi yogurts are fortified with added Vitamin D and are available in 3 delicious flavours of Strawberry, Forest Fruits and Toffee which make them far more appealing to children than fish.
According to Paula “Yogurts fortified with vitamin D can helps the body to absorb calcium which is needed for the normal development of bones and teeth in children and the maintenance of our skeleton as we age.”
Both our Gofi and Yofi yogurts are a good source of protein.
Paula points out that “protein is needed for the normal growth and development of muscle mass in our bodies throughout our life.”
Yogurt is not usually a source of fibre unless it has been added. Gofi and Yofi have been fortified with fibre (inulin).
Other sources of fibre include wholegrain breakfast cereals, such as porridge, vegetables and wholegrain breads which again, some children may find hard to eat on a daily basis.
According to the National Children’s Food Survey, 61% of children have fibre intakes below the recommended level. Fibre in the form of inulin helps contribute towards good digestive health and 12g of Inulin should be consumed daily to obtain good digestive health.
Sugar has recently become a big concern for many. Yofi and Gofi yoghurts contain a natural sugar called Lactose which is found in the milk. Some yogurts do have additional added sugar but this comes from the fruit or purées which are added to it. This natural sugar is called fructose.
Yofi and Gofi yogurts have only 2% added sugar. This would mean that each 80g pot of Yofi yogurt has 1.6g of added sugar and every 110g of Gofi yoghurt have only 2.2g (less than a half a 4g sugar cube) of added sugar, the rest of the sugar comes from the natural non-extrinsic milk lactose and the intrinsic sugar fruit. These types of sugars are not targeted for reduction by the World Health Organisation.
